Film Week provides the opportunity to introduce the students to critical thinking through writing reviews on the film they have seen, creating presentations on its relation to the history of film and animation, and provokes class discussions. Through the Festival the students are exposed to independent and world cinema whereas they usually just have a relationship to mainstream cinema.

The Festival is a wonderful opportunity. It’s a social event for everybody and some don’t get to go regularly. It also gives the children the chance to discuss the film together.

We take part in the week for two main reasons - it's a real treat and a way of rewarding our kids for their hard work… but we also try to pick films that enhance our learning in a particular area of the curriculum - this year it was French. The trips to the cinema support our teaching of visual literacy and introduce many of our children to the idea that watching a film can be shared experience and the enhanced quality of the image and soundtrack gives them a more exciting and memorable experience.

I always bring the students to the Festival because it always sets up some great pieces of writing. I studied film at university and want to keep the art alive. It is an extension to the French lessons, which they are studying and they really get a lot out of it. They don’t often get the chance to watch a French film with subtitles and this pushes them on to watch more films like this in their own time.
