Film Education and BFFS

Film Education is pleased to announce a new partnership with the British Federation of Film Societies [BFFS], which will bring new opportunities and benefits to community cinemas and film societies across the UK, for this year's National Schools Film Week.

The partnership seeks to expand the reach of the Festival to a large number of new community-based venues around the country, whilst increasing the opportunities for children in local communities to take part in Film Week.

We hope that this partnership will build closer links between teachers, schools and their local film society, or community cinema and give greater access for film societies and community cinemas to Film Education’s educational resources

A BFFS member’s experience of National Schools Film Week

Octagon Films first took part in Film Week in 2009 with three screenings to over 300 children and teachers from schools in Market Harborough and surrounding villages. They worked with Film Education to market the screenings direct to schools in the local area and through local press.

Their experience was so successful they extended their involvement in 2010 to provide eight screenings, accommodating 755 children and teachers from four primary schools and a day nursery. Last year, it grew again to 9 film screenings to 910 children and teachers from six schools.

Schools attending Octagon’s screenings said:

"Superb! The pupils loved it."
"We attend to give the children the experience of viewing a film on the big screen together."
"Some of the children had never been to the cinema so [it’s] a great first experience."

Peter Mitchell, Chair of Octagon Films, told us why they get involved in Film Week:

"We believe in the use of film as a powerful educational tool, but more personally, for the sheer joy of seeing little children absolutely mesmerised by the occasion."
"National Schools Film Week is a great opportunity to grow your audience and involve young people in the important work that film societies and community cinemas do. Share your love of film with the next generation of cinema-goers."
